What is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It is the practice of optimizing your content so that generative AI engines (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude) use your business as a source when they synthesize answers.

GEO is closely related to AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and overlaps with traditional SEO. The distinction: SEO optimizes for a list of links. AEO and GEO optimize for being the cited source in an AI-generated answer.

How GEO differs from SEO

SEO rewards comprehensive pages with strong authority signals and backlinks. The goal is to rank in the top results.

GEO rewards extractable, quotable, structured content. The goal is to be the source an AI engine cites when it synthesizes an answer.

A page can rank well in traditional search and never get cited by a generative engine. Why? Because the answer is buried in prose rather than structured for extraction.

How to optimize for generative engines

1. Answer the question first

State the answer in the first paragraph. Do not make the AI (or the reader) dig through context. The classic "wall of background before the answer" does not get cited.

2. Use question-style headings

AI engines look for question-answer pairs. Headings like "What is GEO?" or "How does GEO differ from SEO?" make your content extractable.

3. Be quotable

Direct, factual, concise statements get cited. Vague marketing copy does not. "GEO optimizes content for AI-generated search results" is citable. "We deliver best-in-class GEO solutions" is not.

4. Add structured data

Schema markup (FAQPage, HowTo, Article, DefinedTerm) tells AI engines explicitly what your content is. This is the single biggest technical lever.

5. Build authority

AI engines cite sources they trust. Authority comes from consistent publishing on your topic, being cited by other authoritative sources, and clear expertise signals.

GEO for local businesses

For local businesses, GEO matters because AI engines increasingly answer "best [service] near me" queries with cited sources. If a business is the cited answer for "how to choose a [profession] in [city]", that is worth more than any ad.

The honest version

GEO is not separate from SEO. It is an evolution. The fundamentals (good content, clear answers, authority) are the same. The difference is structure: making your content extractable so generative engines can cite it cleanly.

Key takeaway

GEO optimizes for AI-generated answers. Structure content for extraction, build authority, and monitor citations.
